| Nolan began his airline career in 1962 in Indianapolis when he was recruited by all-cargo carrier, Slick Airways, for the position of customer service representative. Slick was based in San Francisco and operated 1049H Lockheed Super Constellations and Canadair CL-44 aircraft serving BOS, BDL, IDL, (Idlewild was renamed JFK after the President’s assassination), ORF,IND,MDW,DFW,IAH,LAX and SFO. When Slick ceased service in 1965, Nolan was immediately hired by Trans World Airlines as a Cargo Reservations Agent. Nolan’s career was interrupted in 1966 when he was called to serve his country with the US Army in Vietnam. In 1968, having completed his service in the Signal Corps as Sergeant E5, Nolan returned to TWA. In 1970 he was furloughed when his job classification was eliminated. Nolan found work with Indiana Transit Service where, as an IATA Agent he prepared international documentation for several airlines and came to the attention of the District Manager for Pan American World Airways. Pan Am was opening a cargo drop station in1972 in Indianapolis and began trucking cargo to Chicago to connect with PAA’s freighter. Nolan worked as customer service agent and coordinated PAA’s cargo operation with handler Airborne Freight. Eight months later Nolan was recalled to TWA to work in Honolulu as liaison between TWA’s management and cargo handler Aloha Airlines. When TWA and Pan Am did a route swap in the Pacific, TW ceased service to HNL. Nolan was not ready to leave paradise and, in 1975, left TWA for Continental Airlines. In 1982, faced with being reclassified to part time and facing another furlough, Nolan reluctantly transferred to San Francisco with Continental where he was challenged by the airline’s two bankruptcies and the Loma Prieta earthquake which destroyed the cargo facility. Nolan, now Service Manager, assisted Cargo Manager Brian Wessling in setting up temporary facilities in order to keep CO’s cargo operation going. Nolan’ s career with Continental included being Cargo Agent, Service Manager, and District Manager Cargo Sales covering SFO, SEA, PDX, and ANC. Nolan’s “airline industry fun bucket” was full and he retired from CO June 1, 2006. After the untimely death of Dave Warf, CO Cargo Manager, Nolan volunteered to take over as Editor of the SFACA Newsletter. He continues to keep the newsletter and Dave’s memory alive while enjoying the benefits retirement |
